Arusha Campus News - 12th February 2010

Dear Parents,

Direct from the Director
Issues surrounding fees and fee payment are clearly outlined in school documentation. The payment options available to parents are also clearly outlined. It is also possible to discuss specific family financial situations with the Head of Campus, the Director or the Finance Manager. We will make every effort to be flexible in regards to your individual needs. Non-payment of fees or discretionary payment of overdue fees without the payment of surcharges is not among options available. Please be aware that the school considers the surcharges on late payment as a part of the fee obligation owed by the parent. Non- payment of surcharges is considered as non-payment of fees and will therefore be handled in the same manner. Any failure to pay surcharges can result in the removal of students from school.

We understand that conditions arise that may prevent payment of fees in a timely fashion. In such situations, we can be flexible if there is communication of a need to implement some form of payment plan. If there is no communication, we can only act upon the fact that there has been no payment.

General Campus News

Intentions for the 2010 Academic Year
We have begun the process of planning for the next academic year. Part of this planning is to determine which students are intending to return in the new year. We ask therefore for parents to indicate what their intentions are for their children next year. Parents are required to give notice of withdrawal at least 30 school days (excluding weekends and school holidays) before the child is withdrawn from school. In absence of notice parents are required to pay an additional fee of ½ term's tuition in lieu of notice.

M1 Field Trip
The M1s have just arrived home from four days camping and exploring the regions surrounding lakes Manyara and Eyasi. It was a wonderful opportunity to compare and contrast these regions and to look forward to what will happen in the future to these regions, especially in regard to the Lake Eyasi region and the various indigenous people that live there. Below are some photo snapshots of what happened! The M1s will dedicate their time on Monday to planning and presenting their thoughts and ideas to a panel of experts of what decisions they would make for the future of the Eyasi region.

French with Mirjam Berghuis
Dans la classe de français...

The M1s are going to be making children's "lift the flap" books to share with the younger primary students concerning the weather, seasons and their impact on the activities we do. We have been working on this material for a few weeks and just completed the oral component. The book project will be part of their written assessment.

The M2s have been busy studying "le rendez-vous" or dates. Each student has created a paper doll and it's accompanying clothes. Students gave instructions to their partners on how to dress their doll for the date. Now that everyone is properly attired, they can go out on the town. We'll be looking at accepting invitations, going out to do some sort of fun activity and then ending up in a restaurant to order food and enjoy a meal together. So far students have been very enthusiastic and creative. It's been an entertaining couple of weeks!

Teen Fashion Magazines are all the rage in M3. Students are working in small groups to create their very own French Magazine. We've been focusing on the theme of peer pressure and the pressure exerted by the media on young people. Students have written some insightful articles and advice columns so far.

In M4 we're looking at how the traditional meal has changed since the introduction of Fast Food. We have been studying trends in obesity and its related health risks as well as our own perceptions of a balanced diet. The M4s have just finished a brochure on healthy eating and are going to be working on presentations this coming week about healthy lifestyles in general.

The M5s have been looking at school life and the role it plays in their day to day activities as well as how it differs from country to country. We are finishing off this unit and moving on to a unit on plans for the future. These should tie in together nicely.

    PYP Evaluation Visit
I would like to thank everyone involved in the primary school for helping to make this Evaluation Visit a very streamlined and constructive process. Today we said farewell to both Tricia and Yvonne and wished them an enjoyable time on the Moshi Campus and a safe journey home. We look forward to receiving our official report outlining both commendations and recommendations for future growth and development within the primary years programme within the next 2 months.
