Umoja and ISM together!
The music department from Umoja Arts Centre is moving into ISM Arusha!
As a result of this, the Suzuki program, which originally started at ISM and offers private and group instruction in violin, viola, piano, cello, and guitar, will be housed in the music block beginning quarter 4. Additionally, ISM has agreed to let Umoja use the space to run some of its other programs on Saturdays including the Umoja Ensemble, a group which focuses on learning traditional Tanzanian song and dance as well as creating original works fusing these with other styles using movement, voices and instruments. ISM students are welcome to join!
For more info on this or any of Umoja's programs please email . .
We are very excited about the partnership and are looking forward to working together.
International Elephant Frieze at ISM International festival 2010
Have you heard of the Pride of Kenya, the Elephants of Amsterdam, the Orca of Vancouver, the Bears of Berlin, the Cows of Edinburgh and the Moose of Toronto? Well on Saturday at the International Festival we are planning to create an International Elephant Frieze. These plywood elephants are waiting for you to come and individualize them using national patterns and symbols or images that represent your country(ies). We will provide the cut out plywood elephant and the paint, you come with your ideas and images. Completed Elephants will be permanent display at ISM Arusha Campus. We are looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Linda and Ilona.
International Festival and children
We would like to encourage as many families from the ISM community to join us on the 13th March. Please note that children must come supervised by an adult and that there will be food and drink for sale at the event.
Wheel Covers
If you would like to have an ISM wheel cover for your car they are available from reception free of charge. We are happy to provide one cover per family.
Advertising on Campus
If you wish to advertise at school with a poster you must first gain approval from the Head of Campus.
Pool Parties

International Day
is of course tomorrow and we hope to see many of you in national costumes and having a great day. On such days as these that we appreciate what it means to be internationally-minded.
The following questions help us to think about international-mindedness:
Do we fully understand the values and beliefs of our own culture?
Do we celebrate our own culture?
From understanding our own culture, do we better understand the values and beliefs of other cultures?
Do we look for similarities between cultures instead of emphasizing differences?
Do we celebrate diversity?
Do we bridge cultural divides and try to make a more peaceful world?
Have a wonderful internationally-minded day!
High School Musical
This will take place on Thursday and Friday evening at 1900 here at Arusha Campus. Tickets are 5000TSH for adults and 2000TSH for children. It would be great to see everyone’s support on this production in which so many of the Secondary have been involved with.
Science Fair
Well done to all students who showed their scientific flair at the annual science fair last Wednesday. The range of scientific research was indeed impressive and they communicated their methods, findings and background information very effectively through their writing and oral presentations. Special thanks to Annette Wood and all those who participated in the fair.
A Technology request from Carl Love
For home and school communications, it is important to note that our campus ‘officially’ works and runs off of Microsoft Office 2003 (not Office 2007 with for example Microsoft Word .docx file formats).
At times, it can be a difficult for staff and students trying to convert 2007 versions of files to 2003 versions. All of the computers on campus have Office 2003 installed, with only a few holding the 2007 version. Further, it should be noted that Office 2007 has a much higher demand on individual computers memory and therefore performance - in effect slowing your computer down. Perhaps something to consider even for your home computers. We hope this does not cause any great inconvenience, but is important that the school community is well aware of how we operate at the school.
Sports with Charles Schofield
The annual swim gala at St. Constantines is tomorrow. The first race starts at 9:30am, finishing time is 1:30pm. Please bring water and sunscreen.

Student Led Celebrations
We would like to thank all our parents who attended our student led celebrations today. The success was seen on the smiles of the student’s faces and in the confident manner in which they led their celebration of learning.
Did you know?
In EC: The students will be sharing their 3D puppets at share time next Friday!!! Don’t’ miss it!!! The students would like to thank Illona for coming into school and inspiring their artworks. This work is connected to their unit of inquiry about how people express themselves using many different types of media, you are welcome to visit their room and celebrate their creativity.
In P1/2: A pre assessment task the students have just completed has been identifying and classifying animals into 3 different categories: Many - Few (Endangered) and Non (Extinct). This is in relation to their new unit of inquiry about why some species of animals are endangered and why some are already extinct. Please visit their room to read and interpret their recordings and when you are at home talk about how we share the environment and some of the ways we may be able to affect animal survival here in Tanzania!
In P3/4: The students have been exploring, discussing, describing and identifying the different attributes of 2D & 3D shapes. Make sure you visit their rooms and share in their discoveries.
In P5/6: The students have separated into 2 different inquiry groups to investigate their next unit of age appropriate units of inquiry. The P5 students are working with Mr. Mongardi and will be discussing and developing different perspectives on why people judge other people the way they do. They will be inquiring into the impact of racism, prejudice, discrimination and segregation and our rights and responsibilities as we interact with others. Meanwhile the P6 students will be working with Ms. Croome looking at how our bodies change throughout our lifetimes and the physical changes that prepares us for new experiences. Please take the time to talk with your children at home about their knew learning and help them share, develop and identify their own family beliefs and values.
Share Time Assembly
Our next Share time assembly will be hosted by our EC & P1/2 students next Friday 19th March.
Warm Regards
Betty Brown Head of Primary & PYP Coordinator
