Moshi Primary News: 14 September 07

  Dear Parents,

The first term of the year is now well in progress and the P1 to P6 students are moving into the final week of their first Unit of Inquiry of the year. Today Narelle, Ray and David have travelled to the Arusha Campus to reflect upon the learning experiences of their students during this unit and to plan the next Unit of Inquiry with their year level colleagues. I would like to thank Janien Mainwaring and Patricia Van Aarst for covering the P1/2 and P3/4 classes for the day.

Also today I took the P5/6 class to Arusha to participate in a mini Sports Meeting. The students were put into their houses, Kibo, Mawenzi or Meru, which they will now stay in for the rest of the time they are at ISM. They then participated in two hockey matches and two football matches against teams of seven students from the Arusha P5/6 classes. This was a very enjoyable day for all concerned and the Moshi Campus students performed very well in the two sports which have only been a focus in the after school programme so far this term. The next cross campus Sports Meeting for P5/6 will be in about six weeks time and the sports that will be played then are Netball and Newcombe (a version of volleyball more appropriate for primary aged students).

PYP Parents Workshop – Wednesday 5th September

The first PYP Parent Workshop of the year was held on September 5th and I would like to thank the parents who came on that evening. Ms. Rosi has written her reflection on the evening and this is attached here as a PDF file. The second workshop of the year will be held after the October break and we hope that even more parents will be able to attend at that time!

P3/4 Bake Sale – Monday September 17th

The P3/4 students are holding a Bake Sale in the Breezeway at morning break time. All items will be priced at TSh 500/-, and the primary students will have the opportunity to purchase items at 10.10am on that day so that they have bought before the secondary students arrive! Please ensure your child has some money with them on that day if they wish to purchase something at the bake sale.

Indoor Shoes

A further reminder to request that your child has a pair of indoor shoes at school which can also be used to wear to the pool on swimming days.

Mother Tongue Books

Once again I would encourage families to send in their ‘no longer required’ mother tongue books for the students to share in the library. The representation of all cultures was discussed in the PYP meeting and this is one way we can share each other’s cultures and lifestyles.

Class Parent Representative

We have had one parent from the KG class and one from the P5/6 class who have said that they would like to be the Class Parent Representative. We really need two representatives per class – is there anybody else who would be interested in this role? Please contact me on Ext 110 if you wish to take on this role.

Hats

Please ensure that your child has a hat for playtime. Mr. Macha would like to insist that the students wear a hat during rugby on Mondays and if your child does not have a hat at these sessions s/he may not be allowed to participate.

Class Contributions to Newsletters

The Kindergarten contribution is available here as a PDF file. I am sure that you will enjoy it immensely.

Hello from P1/2

First of all I would like to thank all the parents who were able to attend our assembly last Friday. We really appreciated your efforts and the positive feedback we received from you. It was also really pleasing to hear the comments from the children as we went back to class. These are just two of the types of comments I was hearing. “Wow! That was great, can we do it again?” “I really liked showing the other classes what we have been learning in class.”

Recently in class we have been investigating/recognising rhyme and listening to various poems and stories. We hope to have some of our own poems to share with you in the next newsletter. Children have been finding items that rhyme from home and school and we have been taking photos of these items. As it takes too long to download these photos, we’ll just share some of our favourites. “A mouse in a house” (Marie), “A bear on a square” (Michael), “Beans on some jeans”(Safiya), “A cap on a map” (Tim) and “A bear in my hair” (Abigail).

We then worked with a partner to write some other rhyming sentences.
I’d rather be a fairy and grant a wish,
Than lie in pond being a fish.
(Mercedes & Rohan)

I’d rather be a slimy frog,
Than a scruffy, silly dog.
(Lee & Waeel)

I’d rather be a fat cat,
Than to lie on a dusty, stinky mat.
(Lucas & Pearl)

Finally, on a different note, can you please check that your child’s clothes are clearly labelled with their names as clothes tend to get mixed up and lost on swimming days. Presently we are looking for a grey, ISM polo-shirt that got mixed up with a white one last week. If you can help with this missing item, please come and see me.
Thank you,
Narelle & P1/2

P3/P4

As part of our unit on Art Attack, we have written some poems to express our feelings about art. Here is a poem written collectively by the class.

Art Attack!
Art is glorious, Art is fun.
Art is messy, I like it a ton.
Some artists are happy and some are sad.
So many techniques can make one mad!
We splash some paints, we draw and smudge.
Collages and modeling we can do so much!
Art is creative and interesting and great.
I cant resist to make and create.
Art is good, Art is fun.
I love it, I love it, I love it a TON!

From P5/6

Let me first say how delighted I am with how the class has been applying itself during school time on their Election Campaign Projects. I hope that on the home front they have been equally productive and creative. I am very much looking forward to their election speeches on Tuesday.

Of other news, ask your children to explain this ….
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.”

The students are going well. I am pleased!
David Holt
