Moshi Primary News: 28 September 07

  Dear Parents,

I am writing this newsletter to you all from England as I have had to come here at short notice for personal reasons. During my absence I would advise you that Ms. Rosi is Acting Head of Primary. If you have any concerns you can contact me by e-mail at this address or see Ms. Rosi or Mr. White at school.

Class Parent Representatives

On Thursday morning I met with the parents who have vounteered to be the Class Parent Representatives for each primary class. The parents are Neriscia Blacquiere for Kindergarten, Trudi Haller for P1/2, Shri Dinavahi for P3/4 and Hannelore Gerstenkorn for P5/6. We agreed that in these early stages of their role, their main remit was to assist with the orientation of new ISM families with primary aged children into life in Moshi. They will also assist with organising social events for the primary students such as BBQ's, Bake Sales and Discos.

These parents have asked whether I can provide them with the telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of each primary family. If you DO NOT WISH me to give this information to your child's class parent representative please advise of that fact by e-mail before Monday October 8th.

Lost Property

Please be advised that there is now a lost property basket for primary students belongings in my office (Room 1). Teachers and Primary Assistants will ensure that any clothing or belongings found on the primary playground or around the primary section of school will be taken to this area. I would also advise you that if you are looking for something and it is not in Room 1 that it could be in one of the changing rooms.

Swimming

There have been a number of students from each class who have not been taking part in the class swimming lessons each week. As I have advised many times before this is a compulsory part of the children's curriculum and as such they should be participating in the sessions. If your child is in school then s/he should be swimming. If s/henhas a bad cold or 'flu' (as they refer to it), they should not be in school as they are likely to pass the germ on to other students. I am sure you can appreciate how difficult it is for the class teacher to conduct the swimming session and be mindful of a number of students who are not swimming!

I have a number of swimming costumes (particularly for girls) which the students can borrow if they forget their swimming gear. However, the number of costumes has declined rapidly because students borrow them from me and then never return them. I would be grateful if these costumes were returned and request that if you have any girls or boys swimming clothing that your child/ren have outgrown I would appreciate having them sent to school to keep in the swimming clothing store.

Indoor Shoes

A further reminder to request that your child has a pair of indoor shoes at school which can also be used to wear to the pool on swimming days.

Hats

As the weather continues to warm up I would be grateful if you could ensure that your child has a hat for playtimes and for their outdoor P.E. lessons. If they do not have a hat they will not be allowed to play on the pitches or the courts and will have to stay in the shade on the primary playground.

Assembly Swap

The P5/6 class assembly will now be on Friday November 23rd and the Kindergarten class assembly will be on November 30th. This change has been made due to the Board meeting that has been planned for November 30th.

I will return to Tanzania on October 21st but please do not hesitate to contact me over the next three weeks if you need to.

Kind regards,
Kathy Slocombe
Head of Primary

P5/6 is the class who have contributed to this week's Newsletter.

Dear All,
It is P5/6’s chance to show off this week. Just as well as I have to apologise for the last newsletter as my good intentioned scanning was apparently far too big to be emailed. Sorry! I am learning.

Before I forget, a huge thank you to all the parents and relatives who came to hear our Student Council Election speeches. For the boys after break we nearly needed to relocate it due to such a great turnout. The kids really appreciate the attention at such big moments. Weren’t they great too! Here is a little selection of some of the great persuasive arguments presented by the students. These examples in particular show the values of good leadership that we have investigated in the unit.

Ferdinand: I am an open person so you don’t have to be shy to speak to me if there are problems.
Milou: I don’t mind if you are white, brown, black, blue or yellow or a boy or a girl. I will always represent you as well as everybody else.
Joonatan: I want to do something good for the school. I am a confident, respectful and caring person.
Jinho: Just make yourself think of me as a nice fatty greasy burritos. Except my bead is my determination, my salad is my confidence, my tomato is my respect and my cheese is my commitment.

Then that night, the enormous pride they felt for their performances came out in fabulous ‘Reflection Journal’ entries. It was perhaps the best class-wide piece of homework I have ever corrected. Their reflections on emotions, decision-making and personal achievements were very mature and insightful.

To finish off our unit on ‘Law and Order’, the class also prepared a P.E lesson for the younger grades. They showed so much of the patience, understanding and modelling during their lessons that some of us adults might have been given something to reflect on.

So now, as no doubt you are aware, we come to unit 2. It is slowly evolving before the class. So far they know the unit involves simple machines. We have taken a look at some everyday items that we use and are starting to develop the questions that will drive the unit of inquiry. Another clue for everyone is that this unit will probably involve a lot of construction type activities. Stay tuned parents, we may need some help in coming up with some building resources.

Please come and see me if you have any concerns or queries. I am starting to get to know faces and names and I enjoy the contact with home.

Regards,
David
