Moshi Primary News: 18 November 07

  Dear Parents,

The primary classes (P1 to P6) are now underway with the third Unit of Inquiry of the year and the Kindergarten class is deeply involved in their second Unit of Inquiry. Please ask your child about the new units they are studying as you have may have materials and resources at home that could support the work that is happening in the primary classes.

Portfolios, Written Report and Parent/Teacher/Child Conference

Please note that on Tuesday 27th November your child will be bringing home his/her Portfolio and Written Report which covers the first third of the academic year. There will be a letter to accompany this documentation which explains the written report and gives some questions for parents to pose to their child when discussing the work in the portfolio.

Then on Thursday 29th November we are having a Parent/Teacher/Child Conference day. This event is different from the explanation that I gave in the newsletter of November 2nd for a Student Led Conference Day. Thursday 29th November is a non-teaching day at school but one where parents sign up for a 20 minute conference. This meeting involves the teacher, parent(s) and the child in a discussion about the child’s portfolio, the written report, how the first term’s goals have been achieved and what the goals for the next term will be.

Parents can sign up for their conference time from Friday November 23rd and these sign-up sheets will be on the veranda side of your child’s classroom. If you have more than one child in the primary school please ensure that there is a gap between the times made to meet in the different classes.

Coffee Morning - November 23rd at 7.30am

I would like to invite parents to a coffee morning on Friday 23rd November at 7.30am at the primary picnic tables. During the coffee morning I shall explain the revised reporting format that we are using this academic year. This revised format has been compiled in conjunction with the Arusha Campus teachers so that all ISM primary students obtain their written reports in the same format. The format is quite self explanatory but if you would like to come and discuss it I would love to meet with you next Friday. I will also discuss the procedure for the Teacher/Parent/Child Conference Day on 29th November with anyone who is unsure of how things will work.

Primary Assembly Rota & Sports Day

Despite my optimism regarding the assembly rota in the last newsletter I have to inform you that yet again we have been thwarted in our plans to stage the Primary Sports Day in Term One. We had planned to have sports day on Friday 7th December as it did not clash with Board or EC meetings. However, I now know that this date clashes with two other events! Firstly, the recently planned P3/4 class residential trip which is overnight on Thursday and Friday 6th and 7th December and secondly, the secondary Sports weekend.

The Primary Sports Day will now be on Friday 25th January 2008 starting at 9am and I can assure you that this date does not clash with any other event. See you there.

P5/6 Residential Trip

The P5/6 residential trip will be in Term Two from Monday February 18th to Friday February 22nd. The Moshi campus and Arusha campus P5/6 students will participate in this trip to Lake Natron together as the culminating week of their next Unit of Inquiry, ‘Humans Explore’.

P5/6 Class assembly and Sports Meeting

On Friday 23rd November the P5/6 class will be hosting their class assembly at 9.30am. The P5/6 teachers and students from Arusha campus will also be attending the assembly on that day. This will be followed by a variety of inter campus sports events to include Netball, Newcombe (a form of volleyball) and some Swimming events.

Extra Curricular Activities (After School Clubs)

This has been a long term for the afternoon clubs programme and most students have been regular attendees at their chosen activities. Please encourage your child to attend all the sessions they are signed up for and not to make arrangements to go to play or go to tea at a friend’s at the scheduled club time.

Whilst writing I would like to remind parents that the primary school day ends at 1.05pm and that I am not officially on lunch duty every day. If parents leave their child at school for lunch it is at their discretion and the child is then responsible to get to the appropriate club or activity. Parents have asked me to arrange for someone to come (on a paid basis), to mind primary students during the lunch time period and I am happy to set up a similar arrangement again if this is required.

Primary Skateboarding Club

Mr. Eaton is away from school this week and cannot therefore take the primary skateboarding club on Thursday at 1.30pm to 2.20pm. A primary student has offered to take the club but he needs an adult to be in attendance during the session before I can confirm this can take place. If your child attends skateboarding club and you are prepared to come to school for this 50 minute period to supervise the session please call me and I will then inform the students that the club will take place.

Primary Rugby

There will not be primary rugby on Monday December 3rd as Mr. Macha will be traveling and is therefore unable to take the session.

Hats

Can I remind you once again that all students must have a hat in school for break times, outdoor P.E. lessons and outdoor clubs? Please note that students who do not have a hat for these times have to remain in the shaded areas.

Class Contribution to the Newsletter

This week it is the Kindergarten class that has contributed to the Newsletter. Ms. Rosi has included some interesting observations and reflections that her students have been making. Please read it carefully, you will be amazed at their comments!

Ms. Rosi’s curriculum information page is attached for your enjoyment.

I hope you have a great weekend.
