Moshi Primary News: 30 January 2008

  Dear Parents,

Last Friday we had our Primary Sports day and we all feel that the event was a huge success. Many thanks to all of the parents who came to cheer on the children in both the team games session before break and the more competitive races which were held after break.

Uniform and Lost Property

Please note that all school uniform and P.E. clothing is now sold by Anita in the administration office at the front of school. In addition, lost property for the whole school is also stored in this area and not by Mr. White or Mrs. Slocombe.

Labeling Belongings

To help prevent the students losing their belongings we suggest that they are labeled clearly so that anyone picking up a lost item can return it to the owner straightaway.

After Term Clubs for Term 2

Last week was the trial week for the students in the After School Clubs session. A few students from the P5/6 class did not have an opportunity to try out their club on Thursday as we had a P6 trip to Arusha to watch their PPTV performance. These students will have the chance to try out their clubs tomorrow.

Meanwhile all of the other students who wanted to change a club or request an additional club have seen me today. Please check with your child what they have said to me and if you are not happy with the choices I would like you to inform me as soon as possible. As from Monday February 4th the students will be expected to be at all the clubs they have signed up for. A register will be taken and I will be following up on the students who do not attend the required clubs.

Science Club - Wednesdays at 3pm-4pm

The Science club is for P6 students only as Mr. Folland is assisting them with preparations for the PYP Exhibition to be held on June 4th 2008. The club has to take place from 3pm to 4pm because of Mr. Folland's teaching timetable. Please note there is no Science Club today as Mr. Folland is with the D1 students in Pangani this week.

Assemblies in Term 2

The Primary assembly time has changed to 7.40am to allow parents to stay for assembly in the morning and not have to drive back to school at 9.30am. The assembly rota for Term 2 is attached and on Friday this week the P5/6 Language B groups will lead the assembly.

Day Boarding

After the Primary assembly this Friday February 1st at 8am, Mr. Eaton and I will be holding a coffee morning in my office (Room 1) to explain the concept of Day Boarding. Please come along if you would like to find out more.

Water Bottles

Every child should have a bottle filled with water in school each day. Many of the students are not bringing water to school and I have explained in the past about the importance of the students drinking water regularly throughout the school day. The water bottles can be refilled anywhere on the campus if your child finishes the water they bring from home.

Please do not send your child with fizzy drinks as these are not allowed during the school day!

Hats

Every child should have a hat in school to wear during the morning break. If your child does not have a hat then she or he will be made to stay in the shaded area for her/his break time.

P5/6 Residential Camp to Magara Camp Site - West Lake Manyara

The P5/6 class will be joining the P5/6 classes from the Arusha Campus for a 5 day residential camp from Monday February 18th to Friday February 22nd. The Arusha campus students have camped at this camp site on more than one occasion before and I would like to assure all parents that a full "Risk Analysis" has been carried out on the suitability of this area for a class trip. More details about this trip will be sent to the P5/6 parents in the very near future.

Primary Disco

This is very early notification that we will be having a Primary Disco on Friday March 14th, the evening of the Primary Swimming Sports. This should round the day off nicely for all the students. More details will be given by the Primary Student Council soon.

Kind regards
Kathy Slocombe

P3/P4 Class Contribution

Many thanks to Ray and the P3/4 class for their contribution to this week's newsletter:

P3/P4 Newsletter
Welcome back after the holidays. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable time.

We have finished the first term with a memorable trip to Lake Manyara National Park, an unforgettable art exhibition and many more super learning opportunities.

Our new unit of inquiry for the next five weeks will focus on the rights of a child. In class we will study the UN declaration on the rights of all children around the world and ways of implementing it in our own community. The students will have the opportunity to visit J.K. Nyerere Primary School as well as Mkombozi Centre for street children where they will interview children their own age. The information gathered will be used to compare how children's rights are implemented in different areas.

In Math we will continue to work on numeracy skills where we will concentrate on multiplication and division strategies. Our main focus will be on telling time. We will learn how to read and write digital and analogue time. Please extend this activity at home by assisting your child in telling the time whenever possible.

Our main focus in language will be on writing questions for and conducting an interview, writing a letter and composing the lyrics for a song or chant on children's rights. We will also explore synonyms and antonyms, parts of speech, and the correct use of tenses in a sentence.

We have two new students in our class this term. They are both from the Netherlands and we are delighted to have them. Sanne Kleinveldt has settled into the class routine already and is a becoming a happy and active member of the group. Joris will be joining us by early February. Welcome to our class. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Please remind your child to bring his/her swim suit and a towel to school on Tuesdays for swimming lessons as well as library books on Wednesdays for our library lesson.

Thank you for all your support during the first term. Here’s to another interesting and informative second term.
