University Admission Tests

Many universities will require applicants to take certain tests in addition to their IB Diploma programme. These requirements vary according to country, but are broadly as follows. Applicants applying to:

USA: Students will need EITHER the ACT or the SAT Reasoning test.
   Students who are not US, UK, Australian or Canadian citizens will also require either a paper-based TOEFL test or an IELTS test.
   Students applying to top universities may require SAT subject tests.

Canada: Students who are not US, UK, Australian or Canadian citizens will require either a paper-based TOEFL test or an IELTS test.

UK: Students who are not EU citizens or whose first language is not English will require the IELTS test.

Australia: Students who are not US, UK, Australian or Canadian citizens will require either a TOEFL test (internet-based test is preferred) or the IELTS test.

TOEFL TESTS

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) tests come in two formats:
The Internet based test (iBT) is available in Dar es Salaam at a cost of $175. Registration must be made online at the ETS website. There are many different test dates available on most weekends. This test is not available in Moshi.

The Paper-based test (PBT) is available in Moshi only at a cost of $170. Registration can be made online at the PBT section of the ETS website.

ISM students can ask for assistance with registration and payment. With parental permission, the school can pay registration fees on behalf of students and bill parents the fees plus any bank charges associated with the transaction. ISM cannot pay fees on behalf of candidates who are not enrolled in ISM.

IELTS Language Tests

These tests are held in Dar es Salaam monthly and on specified dates in Arusha and cost TSh 365,000. They are best suited for applicants to UK universities. Application is made by completing an online form and submitting it to the British Council with required documentation. ISM students can ask for assistance with registration and payment. There is likely to be an IELTS test held in Moshi in May or June 2015 (which is suitable for D1 students to take).

ACT Tests

The ACT Test is a curriculum- and standards-based educational and career planning tool that assesses students’ academic readiness for college. It is intended for students planning to study in the USA and is accepted by most universities and colleges as an alternative to the SAT. Students are tested in English, Math, Reading and Science. Students should register for EITHER the ACT OR the SAT but not both. This test is available in Moshi.

SAT Reasoning Test

The SAT Reasoning Test (previously called SAT 1) is a test of verbal and mathematical achievement and a satisfactory to good score on this test is required of all students planning to enter university or college in the United States. We would recommend any D1 student considering undertaking further education in the USA to take this test in June of their D1 year and possibly again in October or November of their D2 year.

SAT SUBJECT TESTS

SAT Subject Tests (previously called SAT 2) are subject based and are generally required by the more competitive colleges and universities in the US. Students take tests in up to three subjects usually in the first semester of their D2 year. October registration is recommended.
