
International Community Fights Malaria
These international organizations and groups work together to fight malaria in East Africa. From our interviews and the Internet websites we learned about international malaria joint projects, malaria programmes and donor countries, which operate in Tanzania. Their main aim is to fight malaria and to prevent it in East Africa.
· Joint Malaria Programme (Tanzania, UK and Denmark)
· Malaria Programme of the “Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation” at KCMC, Tanzania
· Duke University School of Medicine. Duke Humane Vaccine Institute. KCMC- Malaria research.
· The U.S. President G. W. Bush visited Arusha, Tanzania February 2008 and spoke for fighting malaria and distributing mosquito bed nets across the region.
· ISM, Moshi “Swim for malaria 2005-2006 school year” fund raising event. ISM Moshi community raised funds to buy bed nets for remote villages in Tanzania.
The doctors and researchers we have interviewed, spoke about people neglecting preventing malaria on their daily lives. The following are the methods that people in East Africa should practice consistently.
Some effective methods of preventing malaria:
- Distribute and use bed-nets consistently
- Spray gardens, houses and oneself with mosquito repellent
- Be aware of personal hygiene
- Arrange workshops about malaria, its symptoms and treatment to people who live in malaria affected zones.
- Make medical treatment accessible and affordable in severe malaria zone.
- Travelers /tourists should take malaria prophylaxis tablets
