University Preparation

ISM is committed to helping our diploma students secure places at excellent universities worldwide and to obtain scholarship funding whenever beneficial and possible.

To this end we offer all our diploma students the services of our highly experienced and successful University and College Counsellor, who will meet with students on a regular basis, lead students and families through the various options available, guide all students on the forms and procedures necessary, and ensure an eventual place that will take the student on their next step to a successful career. Many students will also need to take additional tests to support their university admission portfolio. Many of these tests are conducted in school in Moshi. These requirements vary depending on the nationality of the student and the country in which they plan to study, but are broadly as follows. Applicants applying to:

  • USA: Students will need EITHER the ACT® or the SAT® Reasoning test.
    Students who are not US, UK, Australian or Canadian citizens will also require either a paper-based TOEFL® test or an IELTS test.
    Students applying to top universities may require SAT® subject tests.
  • Canada: Students who are not US, UK, Australian or Canadian citizens will require either a paper-based TOEFL® test or an IELTS test.
  • UK: Students who are not EU citizens and whose first language is not English will require the IELTS test. [Note: This requirement may be extended to EU citizens after the UK leaves the EU in March 2019]
  • Australia: Students who are not US, UK, Australian or Canadian citizens will require either a TOEFL® test (internet-based test is preferred) or the IELTS test.

    You can check the dates for the tests outlined below with the Test Supervisor, Keiron White on keironw@ed.ismoshi.com. Any questions about these tests should be directed to Keiron White. Test dates for tests held in Moshi are also shown on the school’s calendar at www.ismoshi.org/news/calendar. Please ensure that you register for any tests at least six weeks before the test date.

    ACT® Tests

    The ACT® Test is a curriculum- and standards-based educational and career planning tool that assesses students’ academic readiness for college. It is intended for students planning to study in the USA and is accepted by most universities and colleges as an alternative to the SAT. Students are tested in English, Math, Reading and Science. Students should register for EITHER the ACT® OR the SAT® but not both.

  • This test is available in Moshi.
  • Cost: US $93.50 or US$ 110 (with writing)

  • IELTS™ Language Tests

    These tests are held in Dar es Salaam monthly and are not available in Moshi. They are best suited for applicants to UK universities. Application is made by completing an online form and submitting it to the British Council with required documentation. ISM students can ask for assistance with registration and payment.

    When registering, students must select the IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test in Dar es Salaam. Other IELTS tests will not be accepted by UK immigration.

  • SAT® Reasoning Tests

    The SAT® Reasoning Test (previously called SAT 1) is a test of verbal and mathematical achievement and a satisfactory to good score on this test is required of all students planning to enter university or college in the United States. Students who take the ACT® will not need to take this test.

  • SAT® Subject Tests

    SAT® Subject Tests (previously called SAT 2) are subject based and are generally required by the more competitive colleges and universities in the US. Students take tests in up to three subjects usually in the first semester of their D2 year. October registration is recommended.

  • Cost: US $64 + $21 per subject

  • TOEFL® Paper-Delivered Test

    TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) tests come in two formats:
    The Paper-Delivered Test (PDT) which can be taken in Moshi, or the Internet-Based Test (iBT) which must be taken in Dar es Salaam.

    The TOEFL® test is required for nationals of Tanzania and other non-English speaking countries for applicants to study in the USA, Canada and many other countries. It is NOT valid for entry to the UK (see IELTS above)

    Test available in November and April ONLY.

  • This test is available in Moshi
  • Cost: US$180

  • Recommended: US/Canada bound D1 students take this test in April. Retakes possible in November.

  • TOEFL® Internet-Based Test

    TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) tests come in two formats:

  • All registration payments must be made by credit card. ISM students can, if they wish, arrange payment through the Test Supervisor in TSh using cash, Paypal or MPesa and this will be subject to an 8% administration fee. ISM cannot pay fees on behalf of candidates who are not enrolled in ISM.
