M3 - M4 Maths Challenge 2007

The M3 and M4 students from both campuses competed in a Maths Challenge on the Moshi Campus in December 2007. The tasks ranged from computer-based logical thinking test, to recipe-making and cooking and culminated in a team maths race in Karibu Hall.

"In the boarding houses, exotic and delicious aromas rise into the air. Enter the kitchens and you will find salsa, guacamole and mint cucumber salad accompanied by many more scrumptious dishes. Students from both campuses were cutting vegetables and mixing as fast as they can; others were working out how much roasted jalapenos to put in.

At the same time in the drama room, M3s and M4s were trying their best to work out what mathematical word is on the taboo card. Is it gradient, equivalent or acute? Not being able to cheat, for two D2s watch like eagles looking for prey. The only way out is to look for a synonym - a very good game to see if you concentrate in math class.

Travel on down to the computer room to find students wracking their brains on puzzles and shouting out how many points they have. Many were complaining about how hard it is, others begging the teachers to give them at least one vague clue, but to no success. Frustration rises as the time ticks on.

Then all ten groups marched all the way to Karibu Hall. All were nervous knowing that this is the last event and their only chance to gain more points. They ran to the two D2s getting their question and run back to their half of their group. Racing to answer the question and getting more points.

At last the points are added up. The best dishes are chosen. Groups of which there dishes didn't make the top laugh as the teachers point out what was too much or too little. In the end everyone was a winner: a winner of learning new recipes to cook at home. I know that everyone had fun. The puzzles were hard but entertaining. The food was mouth-watering. Some couldn't even believe they cooked it."

I would love to thank the D2 students and all the teachers that made this possible, especially Mr. Richert.
