E. African Model United Nations - The ISM Team (2003 and 2004)

In February 2003 and again in February 2004, ten lucky IB1 and IB2 students participating in the Model United Nations travelled to Kenya's busy capital, Nairobi. These students had the amazing opportunity to attend the 21st and 22nd annual East African Model United Nations. This programme is aimed at giving students all over East Africa the chance not only to interact with other students from diverse backgrounds, but to participate in active debate and learn about the United Nations.
All the students involved were delegates representing the member states of the United Nations. The delegates from ISM in 2003 were representing two countries, Slovenia and Burundi. In preparation for this conference the drafting of resolutions was necessary and these resolutions contained any issues that the delegates felt needed to be addressed. When we arrived in Nairobi we were overwhelmed by the number of participants. Altogether there were 800 students from Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
The following day proved to be just as exciting as the actual conferences commenced at the UN office in Nairobi. Debates were held in various committees depending on which the resolution was best suited for, eg Political, Health, Human Rights, or Ecology & Environment. In addition to these separate committees were the Security Council and the International Court of Justice. The first three days consisted of debating resolutions in the appropriate committee rooms. Once these were approved by committee, the resolutions were then presented to the General Assembly for further debate during the last two days in Nairobi. I would like to congratulate the delegates of Slovenia and Burundi for doing an excellent job (as this was our first time). The MUN is a significant programme for developing leadership skills, learning about parliamentary processes and acquiring social skills. I would also like to say thank you to Ms Sproston (taxi service!) and Mr Macdonald for their assistance, and to Mr Williams who managed to wear a tie for four whole days!
Tania Gobena (IB2)
