New Teachers - 2010/11

We are pleased to be welcoming the following new teachers to ISM in January 2011 and August 2010.

Chris Wood, Environmental Systems & Chemistry (Moshi Campus)

A BIG Hello to everyone in Moshi, and thank you for making me feel so welcome.

I'm, joining to teach the IB Environmental Systems and Societies, MYP science and Chemistry. My degree is in Environmental Science with a specialism in Marine Chemistry. I have been teaching Science and Chemistry in the UK in Reading, Bath and Plymouth. I have never been to Africa before, so am looking forward to experiencing all that it has to offer.

My main interests are cycling, rugby, reading and cooking. I had a lot of fun trying to get my chef's knife through customs on the way out.

Cheers
Chris (joining ISM in January 2011)

Jonathan Bigg, Physics & Mathematics (Moshi Campus)

I will be joining ISM from Bahrain, a tiny island kingdom in the Middle East, where I have been working since 2005. I am British and have previously taught in South Africa, Brunei and England.

As well as teaching Physics and a little bit of Maths, I am really looking forward to becoming involved with ISM's outdoor pursuits and community service programmes. At my current school I have been fortunate to be able to lead International Award expeditions in Bahrain, Cyprus and, best of all, to Mount Meru in Tanzania!

I have three children. The eldest two (Annie, 8 and Fraser, 6) will be joining ISM. My youngest, Marcus, was born in April 2010 and will be staying home with my wife, Nina. Our family love the outdoors - the picture was taken on a camping trip to Exmoor last summer.

My main sporting interests are cycling and mountaineering both of which I excelled at in my youth. I love travelling and have spent many months backpacking, hitchhiking, trekking and cycle-touring around Europe, Asia, Africa and North America.

Tristan Clifton, Music Teacher (Moshi Campus)

Hello, Emily and I are based in Colchester in the east of England. I’m currently running the music department in a college in Braintree and Emily is a local GP Doctor.

I studied music at London College of Music, specialising in performance and jazz, although I have a fairly eclectic taste in music. I have a variety of teaching experiences from training and working in London, Brighton and Ghana. I enjoy all different types of music and play several instruments, although my main instrument is the saxophone.

I enjoy all sports, particularly mountain biking, hiking, surfing and frustratingly trying to improve my golf game.

We have always had a long held ambition to move to Africa. We are looking forward to living and working in Tanzania, joining the ISM community, learning Swahili, exploring Kilimanjaro, and visiting family in Dar Es Salaam.

Anna & Mark Dombkins, Boarding Parent & Mathematics (Moshi Campus)

Hi there,

I'm Mark Dombkins, and my wife Anna, son Jackson (nearly 4yrs) and daughter Jemima (nearly 18 months) will be joining you in July 2010. We couldn't be more excited! I'll be teaching Maths and Anna will be a boarding parent.

We come from a beautiful part of Australia called Wollongong, which is on the coast, just south of Sydney. We love the beautiful beaches, mountains and parks around our area. I've been teaching Maths for 8 years and have loved every minute of it. Anna is a child and adolescent counsellor and has been working in community organisations and schools, and raising our lovely children. We really enjoy doing things outside together as a family. I like to run and swim and am looking forward to taking on Kilimanjaro.

We've had a heart for Africa for a long time and it's so wonderful to finally be on our way! We are looking forward to a new challenge and to meeting new friends from all over the world.

See you all soon!
Mark, Anna, Jackson and Jemima.

Rick Fitzpatrick, History & Diploma Coordinator (Moshi Campus)

Greetings to all in the ISM community. I'm going to be the DP Coordinator as well as teaching DP History and MYP Humanities. I've travelled many times in Tanzania, and am greatly looking forward to returning again to be based there full-time.

As far as my teaching experience goes, I've been working for the past three years in Germany, where I've taught DP History and DP Theory of Knowledge, in addition to being the CAS Coordinator. Prior to that, I taught in Egypt, the USA and Belize, and also worked in Mozambique and Sierra Leone in humanitarian aid. My first degree (Political Science/Philosophy) was from Boston College. I also hold a Masters degree in International Law and Diplomacy (Comparative Political History) from the Fletcher School at Tufts University in Massachusetts and a Masters in Leadership in Teaching from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. My teaching specialisation and credentials are in middle school and high school History/Social Studies.

I am an avid runner, love cross-country skiing, and enjoy following international politics and reading non-fiction biographies as well as learning to speak new languages. While in Tanzania I am keen to learn Swahili. I will be joined in Moshi by my wife and two young sons.

Marlaina Harper, P5/6 Teacher (Moshi Campus)

Hello! We are the Harpers. We moved to Tanzania four years ago and began an NGO working with rural assistance projects. This has given us amazing opportunities to know more about Tanzania, getting to know the people, language, and culture. We have one son of 17 months, named Imani. Imani was born in Mwanza, Tanzania and came to join our family in July of 2009. Adoption has always been on our hearts long before we moved to Tanzania. It has been a long journey, but we wouldn't trade it for anything.

Marlaina taught primary school in Northeast Georgia, USA before moving to Tanzania. Marlaina has a BS degree in Early Childhood Education and Dusty has BFA degree in photography. We really enjoy the outdoors and have reached the top of Kilimanjaro in 2007. We love spending time with friends in the community and having guests in our home for dinner and card games. We have loved living in Moshi and especially enjoy the diversity in the community. Marlaina has been part of the ISM community in the past, working part time in P5 and providing cover teaching in primary. She is really excited about being at ISM full time this coming year.

Tim Hope, Head of Boarding (Moshi Campus)

Hello, my name is Tim Hope. My family and I are very much looking forward to coming from Norway to ISM, Moshi and Tanzania. After my MA from the University of Bergen we lived on campus at a Norwegian co-ed boarding school in western Norway where I taught English and geography. We were also fortunate to experience living together in Virginia, USA, where I was a Fulbright exchange teacher at Woodberry, an all-boys boarding school. The past years I have been working as director of the Teacher Education Unit at the University of Agder, here on the Norwegian south cape. I have really enjoyed the positive work spirit and enthusiasm for teacher education among my colleagues here. In my spare time I enjoy mountain biking, hiking, choir and tending the fruit trees of our garden.

I am married to Elin, a registered nurse who has been working in our city’s emergency room and at its vaccination office. She has studied tropical medicine and has just finished a specialization in infectious medicine and HIV/AIDS prevention. Our two youngest children, Ingrid (14) and Johannes (11), are looking very much forward to finding new friends at ISM. Our oldest daughter Kristine (19) is currently a boarding student at a secondary school in western Norway but was an exchange student in Brazil last year. We have also hosted exchange students at our home. I met Elin when we were both students at a boarding school, a year my parents lived abroad. So we have experience in what it implies to be a boarder and living away from family as well as what it means to have your own children living far away from home.

For me, coming back to ISM is like coming home, as I was a pupil at ISM for two years in the late 70s. Elin and I have visited Tanzania a few times in the past years but now really look forward to spending more time with its people, learning more Swahili, and to be a part of the whole ISM community.

(Tim Hope will be starting as Head of Boarding and Kivuli boarding parent from 1st October 2010)

Gina Kirkpatrick, Mathematics & Science (Arusha Campus)

Hi! My name is Gina Kirkpatrick and I was born and raised on the prairies in rural Manitoba, Canada. I moved to Winnipeg to attend the University of Manitoba where I obtained a Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy. After a brief and less than satisfying career in physiotherapy, I returned to university where I completed my Bachelor of Science and my Bachelor of Education (After Degree Program). Since then I have spent my time teaching in my hometown of Dominion City, and more recently at an all boys high school in Winnipeg.

My parents met while teaching at an international school in Tripoli, Libya, and have instilled in all of their children a love for education and travel. I am the last of four siblings to spend some time working abroad, and am very much looking forward to my first international teaching experience at ISM. I also have a great love for sports, fitness, and animals that makes Tanzania sound like a great fit for me. I look forward to becoming an active member of the school community and finding great adventure!

Maree Raeburn, Head of Primary (Arusha Campus)

My love of learning (and travel) began more years ago than I care to remember- and I feel incredibly lucky that as a teacher I get to combine both and to live and work in amazing places around the world.

For the last 12 months I've had 'Central Park' as my backyard and a view of the Manhattan skyscrapers from my 30th floor apartment. In New York I work in lots of different schools, jumping on the subway each day and heading off to the Bronx or Queens to work with teachers, principals and students. On weekends there are galleries, shopping, theaters, bookstores, shopping, restaurants and shopping! Previously, I spent 3 years at an IB World school in Guangzhou, China, another huge city full of high-rise buildings and millions of people. I've also worked in Turkey, Scotland and my home country, Australia. I love exploring new places, meeting new people and sampling all the local delicacies- attempting to record all these experiences through photography. I'm thrilled to be moving to Arusha, and I’m looking forward to working with the IB programs again, and joining the ISM community.
